> Yes. Which ChatGPT plans show ads, what the ad unit looks like, whether ads change the answers, and the settings that let you limit or avoid ads entirely.

## The short version

Yes. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on 9 February 2026 and has expanded since, including a self service wave for the Middle East and North Africa announced on 31 August 2026. Ads can appear below answers, are clearly labelled, and may appear on ChatGPT's unpaid tier and the Go plan. Paid plans from Plus upward do not have ads, and a person under 18 is never shown one regardless of which plan they use.

## Who sees ads, and who doesn't

| Plan | Ads |
| --- | --- |
| Unpaid tier | May appear |
| Go | May appear |
| Plus, Pro | No ads |
| Business, Enterprise, Edu | No ads |
| Accounts identified as under 18 | No ads |

OpenAI identifies under 18 accounts using a combination of behavioural and account level signals, including stated age, how long the account has existed, typical times of use, usage patterns over time and the general topics a person discusses, plus age prediction where available. This is not a single checkbox a user ticks once; it is a running assessment, which is also why OpenAI describes it as a combination of signals rather than one rule. Practically, this means the plan table above is the reliable, static part of the answer, and age identification is the part that depends on signals that can change for a given account, which is our reading rather than an OpenAI statement.

## What the ads look like in ChatGPT

Most units are the standard ad format: a block below a response, clearly labelled and shown separately from the answer text above it, carrying the advertiser's name and logo, a title, a short line of copy, one or more images, and a link out to the advertiser's page. Selecting the unit's three dot menu opens Hide ad, Report ad, About this ad, which explains why that specific unit was shown, and an option to ask ChatGPT to share that ad in the conversation. OpenAI says a person will see one ad unit that may contain one or multiple images below a response, chosen on expected relevance and outcomes, so a given response may carry no ad at all. OpenAI is also testing a multi image visual ad format during image generation: an ad with several images from the same advertiser can appear while ChatGPT creates an image, and it disappears once the image finishes generating.

Beyond that standard block, OpenAI's help centre also documents Sponsored Agents, a format that opens a chat with an AI representative of a business directly from an ad, covered in full below and in our dedicated [Sponsored Agents guide](/guides/sponsored-agents/). Whichever format you encounter, OpenAI says ads are clearly labelled and shown separately from ChatGPT's response, which is how it keeps an ad visibly apart from ChatGPT's own answer.

## Where ads appear, and where they do not

Below a response, clearly labelled, and, in a current test, while ChatGPT generates an image. Not in Temporary Chats. Not near sensitive topics, including personal health, mental health and politics. OpenAI says it does not currently allow political advertising. This placement choice is deliberate rather than incidental: an ad that sat inside or before the answer, rather than clearly below it, would blur the line OpenAI states it is trying to hold between the model's own output and a paid placement.

A single user is not shown ads at a fixed, predictable rate. OpenAI has not published a frequency figure, a maximum number of ads per session, or a formula for how often an eligible account sees one. What it has published is how an ad is chosen: expected relevance and outcomes, weighing the context and intent of the conversation, the ad and its landing page, the advertiser's context hints and, with personalisation on, select wider signals. This is one of the clearer differences from a browser or app with a fixed ad slot that fills on every page load regardless of relevance; here, in our reading, no relevant ad can mean no ad at all for a given response, even on an ad eligible plan.

## Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?

No, and this is worth answering directly because it is the question most people actually mean when they ask whether ChatGPT "has ads" in a way that matters to them. OpenAI states that ads run on separate systems from the chat model, so the presence of an ad opportunity does not touch how a response was generated, and an advertiser cannot shape, rank or alter what ChatGPT says in answering a question. The ad is selected and placed after the answer exists, not woven into producing it. OpenAI's own five stated principles, covered next, describe this as a deliberate design choice rather than a side effect, and it is the reason the sponsored label and visual separation described above exist at all: the system is built so that what you are told is an answer stays an answer, and what is sponsored is marked as sponsored.

## Why OpenAI is testing ads at all

OpenAI's own explanation is that ChatGPT is used by hundreds of millions of people for learning, work and everyday decisions, and that keeping the unpaid tier and Go plan fast and reliable requires significant infrastructure and ongoing investment. Ads, in OpenAI's framing, help support broader access to ChatGPT and continued investment in the product, without changing how ChatGPT works or what users expect from the experience. That framing matters for the controls described below: OpenAI positions ads as the trade-off that keeps a no-cost tier viable, and builds the opt-out around that trade-off rather than around a simple ads on or off switch.

OpenAI also publishes five principles it says guide how ads were introduced, and they explain most of the specific controls in this guide:

| Principle | What OpenAI says it means |
| --- | --- |
| Mission alignment | Advertising supports OpenAI's mission by helping make AI more accessible |
| Answer independence | Ads do not influence answers, and are kept separate and clearly labelled |
| Conversation privacy | Conversations stay private from advertisers, and user data is never sold |
| Choice and control | Users control ad personalisation and can clear ads data at any time, with a way to avoid ads always offered |
| Long-term value | OpenAI states it does not optimise for time spent, and prioritises user trust and experience over revenue |

Whether that fifth principle, not optimising for time spent, holds up over a longer test period is something only OpenAI's own data can show. It is a stated commitment, not something an outside party can verify from the help centre alone.

## A short timeline

| Date | What happened |
| --- | --- |
| 9 February 2026 | Ads test begins in the United States |
| February 2026 | Personalised ads signals become available to users who enable them |
| May 2026 | Ads Manager introduced for advertisers, opening self service to smaller businesses |
| 31 August 2026 | OpenAI announces self service expansion to India, Europe, the Middle East and North Africa |

## Formats beyond the standard ad you might see

Most ads you encounter are the standard unit described above. OpenAI's help centre also describes Sponsored Agents, a format that lets a person open a chat with an AI representative of a business directly from an ad. OpenAI states this format is currently available only to selected advertisers in a limited alpha test, and that a user may see a Sponsored Agent even though most businesses cannot yet buy one. OpenAI has not published separate privacy rules for the format; its general ads FAQ says that if you choose to message an advertiser through an ad, the advertiser will only see the messages you send them directly. See [Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT ads](/guides/sponsored-agents/) for what is published about the format.

## What is used to choose an ad

Always: what you are discussing in the current chat thread, plus basic context such as general location and language. An ad's language may differ from your interface or conversation language, since language selection can also consider location and settings.

Only with personalised ads switched on: the current thread including personalised responses, how you interact with ads, and past chats and memory, starting from February 2026 when this signal set became available.

## What advertisers never receive

OpenAI lists chats, chat history, memories, name, email, precise location, IP address and sensitive information such as health, mental health or political topics. Advertisers get aggregated reporting such as views and clicks. If you message an advertiser through an ad, they see only what you send them directly. OpenAI states it does not share conversations with advertisers and never sells user data to advertisers. This is the same boundary that shows up on the advertiser side of this platform: an advertiser buying ChatGPT ads never sees an individual user's identity or conversation, only aggregated performance numbers, which is a genuinely different measurement model from a search platform where an advertiser can see the literal query that triggered their ad.

## Your controls

In Settings, then Ad Controls, you can manage how ads work for you. Depending on region and eligibility, the settings include:

| Control | What it does |
| --- | --- |
| Personalise ads | Toggle whether ads use signals beyond the current chat thread. Turning it off makes ads less tailored, but does not remove them |
| Past chats and memory | Toggle whether memory and earlier chats can inform ad relevance. If disabled, ads rely more on the current thread |
| View history and topics | See ads you have viewed or interacted with, and the topics used to make ads relevant |
| Delete ads data | Clears ads history and topics data. This does not affect your chats, and can take up to 30 days to fully remove from OpenAI's systems |

On any individual ad, the three dot menu offers Hide ad, Report ad, and About this ad to see why it was shown, plus Ask ChatGPT to share that specific ad in a conversation. By default ChatGPT cannot see the ads shown to you unless you share one this way, and advertisers do not influence what ChatGPT says about an ad shared into the chat.

## How to get rid of ads in ChatGPT without paying for a subscription

If you are on the unpaid tier and would rather not see ads, OpenAI offers a no-ads option that trades ads for tighter usage limits.

Open Settings in ChatGPTFrom the menu on your account.
Select Ads controlsThis is the same section that holds personalisation and history settings.
Tap the option to change your plan and remove adsOpenAI presents this as a plan choice, not a simple toggle.
Choose to reduce message limits insteadThis removes ads at no extra cost.
Confirm the changeThe setting takes effect on the unpaid tier account.

What changes once you switch: no ads, lower usage limits so you may hit rate limits more often, and reduced feature access such as image generation or deep research potentially becoming unavailable. If you hit a limit afterwards, ChatGPT may show a banner offering to upgrade to Plus or Pro, or to switch back to the ad-supported experience by tapping to show ads again. The other route to no ads at all, with no usage trade-off, is upgrading to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu, none of which carry ads.

## Turning ads off is not the same as turning personalisation off

These two settings get confused often enough that OpenAI addresses it directly. Turning off ad personalisation changes how ads are selected: you still see ads, just based on less of your ChatGPT history. Choosing the no-ads option removes ads entirely, but only as an unpaid tier setting, and it comes with the usage trade-off above. A Go plan user who wants no ads has to switch back to the unpaid tier to use that no-ads option, or upgrade to a plan that has no ads at all.

## The other side: what "ChatGPT has ads" means for your business

The same facts on this page read differently once you flip from being the person seeing the ad to the business trying to place one. The audience is large: OpenAI's 31 August 2026 announcement cited more than 1 billion weekly active ChatGPT users. OpenAI has not published how many of them are on the ad eligible unpaid tier and Go plan specifically, so treat that total figure as the outer bound of reach, not a number you can plan a campaign against directly.

The placement sits below a relevant answer rather than interrupting it, and the same rules that protect user trust, labelling, no answer influence, no conversation access, are also what keep that placement valuable to advertise into. An ad account on a platform users trust is worth more than one on a platform they are actively trying to avoid, and the five principles OpenAI publishes are, from an advertiser's side, effectively the conditions the inventory is sold under: you are buying a labelled, separated placement next to a trusted answer, not a placement inside the answer itself.

What this rules out is also worth naming plainly. There is no keyword targeting the way Google Ads offers it, no way to buy a guaranteed slot against a competitor's brand name, and no access to individual user data the way some other platforms expose it to advertisers at an aggregate cohort level. The targeting tools that do exist, context hints, custom audiences, location and platform, are covered in our [what ChatGPT ads are and how they work](/guides/chatgpt-ads-explained/) guide, which is the right starting point if this section is the one that actually brought you here.

## What this looks like in the UAE

For a UAE user, the plan table above is the whole story: the unpaid tier and Go show ads, Plus and above do not, and the Ads Controls settings work the same as anywhere else. OpenAI says ad language selection can consider location, language settings and conversation language, and that an ad's language may differ from your conversation or interface language, so a UAE user may see ads in Arabic or English depending on those signals and on which language versions advertisers have written.

For a UAE business on the other side of that ad, the account is billed in AED with a minimum daily budget of AED 65, the advertising entity has to be UAE registered, and the working week to plan around is Sunday to Thursday even though OpenAI's own budget pacing runs Sunday to Saturday. UAE self service access opened as part of the Middle East and North Africa wave OpenAI announced on 31 August 2026. OpenAI's own availability page lists the UAE as available in a capture dated 17 September 2026, Index Lab's tracker logged it on 16 September, and our own checks confirmed it on 21 September and 17 October. See [ChatGPT ads in the UAE](/guides/chatgpt-ads-uae/) for the full advertiser side of that setup. Some verticals common in UAE advertising sit under OpenAI's restrictions: clinics fall under health services, which OpenAI's eligibility table does not allow outside the US, and OpenAI's policies prohibit ads for individual housing rentals or sales.

The political and sensitive topic restrictions named above apply in every market. On top of them, OpenAI's eligibility table splits regulated categories into US and All Other Countries, and the UAE follows the stricter All Other Countries column: health and legal services are not allowed, and most financial services are prohibited or limited to select approved advertisers. Anyone in a regulated UAE sector, healthcare, financial services or real estate among them, should read our [ChatGPT ads policies](/guides/chatgpt-ads-policies/) guide alongside this one, since eligibility and content review both sit with OpenAI's global policy, checked against the UAE's own regulatory requirements separately by the advertiser.

## Does this replace ads elsewhere in your marketing plan?

No, and treating it that way would be a mistake regardless of how large ChatGPT's user base is. OpenAI itself has not published performance benchmarks for ChatGPT ads across advertisers or industries, so there is no published basis yet for reallocating a budget away from a platform with a longer track record. The realistic way most UAE businesses we see are approaching it is as a test allocation, run alongside Google Ads and Meta rather than instead of either, sized so that a disappointing result does not damage the rest of the plan and a good result is a reason to grow the allocation with evidence behind it. Our [ChatGPT ads versus Google ads](/guides/chatgpt-ads-vs-google-ads/) guide sets out how the two differ in auction mechanics, targeting and measurement if you are deciding how to split a test budget.

## Common questions this raises

Practical answers based on the facts above, not new platform claims.

- **Will ads make ChatGPT slower or change its answers?** No. OpenAI states ads run on separate systems from the chat model, so an ad appearing does not touch how a response was generated.
- **If I turn personalisation off, will I see fewer ads?** OpenAI does not say. It states that turning personalisation off can make ads less tailored but does not remove ads, and that you will still see ads based on the context of your current chat thread.
- **Does deleting my ads data delete my chats?** No. OpenAI states clearing ads data does not affect your chats, and it applies only to the history and topics used for ad relevance.
- **Can I see why I was shown a specific ad?** Yes, through the About this ad option on the ad's three dot menu.
- **Is there a way to see every ad I have ever been shown?** Through the View history and topics control in Ads Controls, which shows ads you have viewed or interacted with and the topics used to make ads relevant to you.

## Quick answers

**Does ChatGPT Plus have ads?**
No. OpenAI says Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts will not have ads.

**Do ads change ChatGPT's answers?**
No. OpenAI says ads run on separate systems from the chat model and advertisers cannot shape, rank or alter responses.

**Can advertisers see my chats?**
No. OpenAI says advertisers do not have access to chats, chat history, memories or personal details, and receive only aggregated performance information such as views and clicks.

**Do Temporary Chats show ads?**
No. OpenAI says Temporary Chats will not show ads.

**Why does ChatGPT show ads at all?**
OpenAI says keeping its unpaid tier and the Go plan fast and reliable requires significant infrastructure and ongoing investment, and that ads help support broader access to ChatGPT without changing how ChatGPT works.

**Can I remove ads without paying for ChatGPT Plus?**
Yes, on the unpaid tier. OpenAI offers a no-ads option there that removes ads but lowers usage limits, such as fewer messages per day and no access to some tools like image generation. Availability varies by region.

**Will under 18 accounts ever see ads?**
No. OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to people under 18, using a combination of stated age, account history, usage patterns and general topics discussed.

**What does a ChatGPT ad actually look like?**
A clearly labelled unit below a response, with the advertiser's name and logo, a title, short copy, one or more images and a link out, shown separately from the answer above it. A three dot menu on the unit gives options including Hide ad, Report ad and About this ad.

**Can I see why a specific ad was shown to me?**
Yes. The three dot menu on any ad includes an About this ad option that explains why that unit was shown.

**Do ads appear on every single response?**
No. OpenAI says you may see ads below a response, chosen on expected relevance and outcomes, and it has not published how often they appear. When an ad does appear, OpenAI says you will see one ad unit, which may contain one or multiple images.
